Humanities Truck, August 2018-May 2020
- Julie developed the initial Humanities Truck website in WordPress. She managed the project’s Islandora community archive, curated online exhibits, and designed & documented processes for generating and implementing interactive oral history transcripts online. Julie transcribed and indexed 40+ oral histories, and created controlled vocabularies and metadata for digital assets. She photographed and videorecorded events, edited photos and videos, and uploaded assets to the website and community archive. In addition, Julie collaborated with public history professors, students, and Humanities Truck Fellows to generate online content, including blog posts and ArcGIS StoryMaps. She wrote scripts to generate XML files from Excel spreadsheet data for Islandora batch file uploads.
- The digital assets were generated from events that took place in diverse neighborhoods across Washington, DC. For example, Humanities Truck teams interacted with and collected cultural/historical narratives from LGBTQ individuals at D.C. Pride and Asian Americans at the Lunar New Year Festival. Publishing stories such as these helps historically marginalized communities see themselves reflected in larger society and helps to broaden perspectives of those outside of these communities.

Rosenwald Schools and the Kingville Community, Stanly County Museum, Albemarle, NC, 2015

Julie recorded oral history interviews of residents who had attended one of these schools and added to the museum’s collections numerous artifacts and photographs donated by individuals. The exhibition was both physical and online.
